With the advancement of power electronics technology, brushless DC motors are gradually replacing traditional brushed motors in many fields. Brushless motors use an electronic commutator (i.e., a controller) instead of a mechanical commutator, achieving electronic commutation through position sensors and power switching devices. This design eliminates the friction losses and sparking issues associated with mechanical contacts, thereby improving reliability and efficiency.

However, mechanical commutators still offer irreplaceable advantages in certain applications. Brushed motors feature a simple structure, require no complex control circuits, and are relatively low-cost. In applications requiring high starting torque or wide-range speed control, brushed DC motors continue to perform exceptionally well. Additionally, brushed motors have lower power quality requirements and may prove more reliable in harsh electrical environments.
In terms of maintenance, while brushless motors eliminate the need for periodic replacement of commutators and brushes, their electronic control systems may be subject to a higher risk of failure. Although the mechanical wear issues of brushed motors require regular maintenance, on-site repairs are typically simpler and more straightforward. The choice between brushed and brushless solutions requires a comprehensive evaluation of specific application requirements, cost budgets, and maintenance conditions.
